Examining the intersections between technology and accessibility.
Technology has opened up new possibilities and opportunities for learners with disabilities. In this space, we explore the history of assistive technology, tracing its roots back to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 through the era of Web 2.0. Assistive technology is not limited to the use of computers to aid teaching and learning, but may also include devices for mobility impairment, prosthesis, emergency response, and cognitive recognition.
Because of the wide range of technologies that might be classified as assistive, we have elected to focus primarily on those that help improve access for learners with visual and hearing impairment. We also provide a list of resources for those interested in learning more about this important realm of instructional and educational technology.
