Zaina is losing her eyesight due to complications from diabetes. She uses the CCTV to magnify printed material. It allows her to write notes and see what she wrote or is writing. Since Zaina is not a member of the digital generation, she was not previously familiar with computer technology. She is losing her eyesight fairly late in life and is encountering many obstacles in her path to a post-secondary education.
Although it would probably be best in the long run for Zaina to force herself to learn audio software for the blind such as JAWS or NVDA, she has opted to use magnification and high contrast tools to aid in her limited vision.
She also uses an iPad which allows her to use limited eyesight and her hearing simultaneously as she navigates her way through her assignments. Many low tech aids have helped her at this stage including high contrast lined paper and Sharpie pens. This generation of students will probably always feel more comfortable using at least some of the low tech choices when learning.
